WHAT IS AN ENGAGEMENT SESSION?

You've seen the wedding blogs, the bridal magazines, the professional looking shots of your engaged friends laughing and kissing each other. It's called engagement photography; essentially it's just a chance for a professional photographer to capture two people in love and who want to share their love with the world (or just themselves).

More than that, it is an opportunity to work with your photographer for the first time - to see how I shoot and for me to get to know you better as a couple. If you haven't had a photographer move with in inches of you to take a photo, it can be intimidating at first. Its a good way for me to help you get more comfortable in front of the camera so there are no surprises on the big day.

These sessions can be as fun and elaborate as you would like to make them. At the end of the day I would like you not only to remember the day you had a photo shoot, but also that you had a great date (with a photographer that tagged along). These beautiful photographs have been used to create Save The Date cards, on wedding websites, on announcement, and even incorporated into wedding day decor pieces.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SESSION?

Once we've decided on a location, a typical session last about one to two hours. During our time together, I will get you comfortable with the idea of being photographed. I'll make you laugh, I'll make you smile, I'll make you do silly dance moves (and I'll do some of my own) - just kidding. Maybe.

It's meant to be fun and that's what I try to capture. Sure, there can be poses and staged shots, but what I try to do is capture the real moments in your interaction and that natural smile that comes just after a laugh. We will play with the immediate environment and try to get your personalities to come through.

Sometimes I'll really like a particular spot and we will stay a little longer there to find that perfect balance between your chemistry and the environment. Next thing you know the Sun is setting, the session comes to an end, and we can all get tacos.

WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?

Wear something fun, something nice, and most importantly something that is you. A bowtie and geek chic glasses? Do it. Floral summer dress and a pair of cowboy boots? I like it. These are photos to look back on years from now. My best advice is to keep it timeless.

As far as colors go, I like the idea of having some contrast with your environment to add a bit of pop. I recommend a bit of layering as it will allow you to add variety to your session; without having to completely change outfits. For guys, it can be a nice jacket, sweater/cardigan to go on top. For the girls, you know you can dress yourself better than I can, so use your best judgement.

CAN WE DO SOMETHING CREATIVE?

Yes! Absolutely yes! Do you want to bring a white arm chair out to the middle of a field of flowers? Yes. A desserts only picnic in a desert? I'm listening. A miniature bowling shoot? I don't know what that is, but lets do it. Whatever your idea is just make sure it reflects your personalities.

What better way to show it than by crafting a shoot around a theme or style that reflects who you are individually and as a couple. Of course it doesn't have to be elaborate for it to be beautiful; creativity and originality can come in any shape and size (or location).
